General Notes
• Updating a Renamed OptiMem
Note that the installer will always place the OptiMem file in the Control Panels folder. If you have renamed OptiMem or moved it to a different location, the installer will not remove it and you may wish to do so yourself in order to avoid having two copies installed.
• Use Installer
Installation is now done using a fully automated Installer program (licensed from Apple) as described in the OptiMem Reference manual. You must use the Installer program to install and personalize OptiMem’s files in order for them to operate correctly. If you copy the files onto your startup disk by dragging and dropping them with the Finder, OptiMem will not be configured to work. Also, remember that OptiMem does not work with system software prior to System 7.
*IMPORTANT* Some system extensions (like virus protection software) and file sharing can interfere with the operation of the Installer. If the Installer does not operate correctly, please disable all extensions (by restarting the computer while holding down the Shift key) and try again. It has also been heard that the Apple Installer used here has problems when a Radius Rocket board is installed and enabled. If your computer has a Radius Rocket board you may wish to turn it off during the installation process.
Note that for installation to proceed, no other application may be running. Some applications have difficulties quitting in response to an installer. If you have any difficulties in this respect, make sure there are no other programs running before opening the Installer.
When entering your Serial ID, notice that it is printed in all UPPER case letters so if you see an “I” it’s an “eye,” not an “ell” (if you use zero or one for the similar letters it should figure out what you mean).
If you have other difficulties in the installation or use of OptiMem, refer to the corresponding sections of the reference manual or to the Troubleshooting section.
If you are currently using a pre-release version of OptiMem we suggest you go ahead and do the full installation, replacing your old preferences. (Your old preferences will still work but the new ones know about more applications, so you will probably be better off switching to the new ones.)
• Selecting Compressed Applications in OptiMem Control Panel
If you use AutoDoubler™, Now Compress™, or More Disk Space™ to compress your files, OptiMem will list any compressed applications for your selection in the OptiMem control panel along with the normal ones (doing an additional search especially for them, if necessary). However, if you have applications that are compressed with other file-level compression products, they may or may not be listed. If not, you will need to select your compressed applications via the directory dialog box by clicking “Select Other…”. (With some compression methods, it was determined that the overhead to search and list compressed applications was excessive, making it much quicker to simply go through the directory dialog box.)
• Disk Compression and Slow Moving Applications
This is an update to a question in the Troubleshooting section of the OptiMem Reference about applications (in particular Word) responding slowly under some conditions. You should not generally see a slow down when combining OptiMem with compressed application files, but it may happen in some unusual cases. Depending on how your system is configured, some applications can slow down if their resource files are compressed (with or without OptiMem). The possibility of this is increased if the application is running in a small partition (which OptiMem encourages).
So, if you find applications running slower, and they have been compressed with a disk, file, or resource compression product, one thing to try is to expand these applications, and configure your compression program to leave them expanded.
Slow Moving Applications, More Generally
If you are very short on disk space and prefer to leave everything compressed, there are other things you can adjust in order to improve performance: You can increase the minimum memory size of an application (as discussed in the OptiMem Reference) or you can increase your system’s disk cache size (from the Memory control panel) and/or your compression program’s cache or buffer size (which can improve performance in general).
• Applications That Don't Release Memory
You may find an application that benefits partially from optimization: it starts at a minimum size and then dynamically allocates more memory as it is needed, but when you close a window and some of the memory is no longer in use, the application does not release it right away. The program may wait until a later time to release the memory for use in another program. We will be happy to work with application publishers in order to eliminate any occurrence of this in their products.
• Applications That Allocate More Memory Than They Use
It is possible that an optimized application, when given access to as much memory as it needs, will simply take it all--even if it doesn’t need it right at the moment. For now the simple solution is to use the OptiMem control panel and set OptiMem Off for such a program. Please let us know if you find any examples of this behavior. We would like to work with the authors of such programs in order to avoid the situation in future releases of their products. We are also investigating a strategy, to include in a future version of OptiMem, which could limit an application that is inclined to grab all the memory available.
